Group Umrah means travelling on fixed dates with other pilgrims, usually with a group leader and a shared itinerary. Private Umrah means your own dates, your own pace and arrangements made just for your family. A group package usually costs less and offers more guidance, while a private package gives you more flexibility and privacy. The right choice depends on who is travelling, your budget and how confident you feel about the journey.

What is a group Umrah package?

In a group package, a travel agent sets the departure date, flights and hotels, and a number of pilgrims book onto the same trip. You travel together, stay in the same hotels and share coaches for transfers and Ziyarat. Many groups are accompanied by a guide or scholar who explains the rituals.

Because the agent books flights and rooms in larger numbers, the price per person is often lower than arranging the same trip privately.

What is a private Umrah package?

A private package is built around you. You choose the dates, the length of stay, the hotels and how many nights to spend in Makkah and Madinah. Transfers are usually by private car, and your time is your own.

It still comes as one booking with flights, hotels, visa and transfers arranged together. The difference is that nothing is shared with other travellers.

Group Umrah vs private Umrah compared

  Group Umrah Private Umrah
Dates Fixed by the agent Chosen by you
Price Usually lower Usually higher
Guidance Group leader, shared support On request, or independent
Pace Follows the group timetable Set by your family
Transfers Shared coach Private vehicle
Company Travel with fellow pilgrims Just your own party

The advantages of group Umrah

  • Lower cost. Shared transport and group rates help keep the price down.
  • Support for first timers. A group leader can explain what to do at each stage, which is reassuring if you have never performed Umrah.
  • Company. Many pilgrims value the friendships and the sense of travelling together for the same purpose.
  • Less to organise. The timetable is set, so you simply follow it.

The drawbacks

  • You must fit your leave and school dates around the group’s dates
  • Waiting for others can make transfers and tours slower
  • There is less freedom to rest, or to stay longer in the Haram, when the group moves on

The advantages of private Umrah

  • Your own dates. Travel when it suits your family, not when a group departs.
  • Your own pace. Rest when you need to. This matters a great deal with toddlers or elderly parents.
  • Privacy. Private transfers and rooms arranged for your family only.
  • Choice. Pick the hotels and the split of nights that suit you.

The drawbacks

  • It usually costs more per person, particularly for a couple or a small family
  • There is no group leader unless you arrange a guide
  • You take more of the day to day decisions yourself

Which one suits your family?

Choose group Umrah if

  • It is your first Umrah and you would like guidance
  • You are travelling alone or as a couple and would enjoy the company
  • Keeping the cost down is your priority
  • Your dates are flexible enough to match a group departure

Choose private Umrah if

  • You are travelling with young children or elderly parents who need a slower pace
  • You can only travel on specific dates
  • You have performed Umrah before and are comfortable on your own
  • You are a larger family, where the cost per person is closer to a group price

If you are travelling with mixed ages, our guide to Umrah with children and elderly parents has practical advice on pacing your trip.

Is there a middle option?

Yes. Many families book a private package and add a guide for the day they perform Umrah. You keep your own dates and pace, and still have someone to lead you through Ihram, Tawaf and Sa’i. Our Umrah Guide service is designed for exactly this.

How Fajar Travels can help

We offer group Umrah packages on set dates through the year, including Christmas, Easter and Ramadan, as well as 3, 4 and 5 star Umrah packages on dates you choose. Whichever you prefer, flights, hotels, visa processing and transfers are arranged for you.

What does each option cost?

We cannot give a single figure, because the price of any Umrah depends on your dates, hotels and airline. What we can explain is where the difference between group and private comes from:

  • Transfers. A coach shared between many pilgrims costs far less per person than a private car.
  • Room occupancy. Group prices are often based on four people sharing. A couple in a double room pays more per person in either type of package.
  • Hotel rates. Agents often secure better rates on rooms booked in larger numbers for a group departure.
  • Guidance. A group leader is shared across the group. A private guide is an extra cost for one family.
  • Dates. Group departures in the school holidays cost more than those in term time, just as private trips do.

For a family of five or six, private transfers and rooms are shared between more people, so the gap narrows. For a couple it is usually wider. Ask for both prices on the same dates and hotel standard before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Is group Umrah cheaper than private Umrah?

Usually, yes, because transport and other costs are shared. For larger families the difference can be small, so it is worth asking for both prices.

How many people are in a group?

Group sizes vary from one departure to another. Ask about the expected size when you enquire.

Can women join a group Umrah?

Many women travel in groups. The rules on travelling with or without a mahram are set by the Saudi authorities and can change, so our team will confirm the current requirements when you book.

Will I have free time in a group package?

Yes. Apart from travel days and any organised tours, your time for worship is your own.

Can I have a private room in a group package?

Yes. You can book a double, triple or quad room for your own party within a group departure.
