Saudi Arabia is a land of dramatic landscapes, and for pilgrims who have a few extra days, it offers real adventure: towering desert cliffs near Riyadh, rolling red sand dunes, the sandstone valleys of AlUla and cool green mountains in the south. This guide introduces the most popular outdoor experiences, the best time to go and how to stay safe.
Why add adventure to your trip?
Most pilgrims from the UK only see Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah. Travelling a little further shows you a completely different side of the country. Adventure trips are especially popular with young adults and families with older children, and they are best planned as a separate part of your journey after your Umrah is complete.
Top adventures in Saudi Arabia
The Edge of the World, near Riyadh
Northwest of Riyadh, a long escarpment drops away to a vast plain below, giving the feeling of standing at the edge of the world. The drive takes around one and a half to two hours from the city, and the final stretch is off road, so most visitors go with a tour operator in a four wheel drive vehicle. Sunset is the most popular time.
Desert dunes and camping
The red sand dunes outside Riyadh are popular for dune drives, quad biking and sandboarding. Many operators offer evening trips with a meal in a desert camp under the stars, which is a memorable experience for the whole family.
AlUla
In the northwest, AlUla is known for its sandstone canyons and rock formations, such as Elephant Rock. You can hike, cycle, take a hot air balloon flight in season or simply enjoy the scenery. AlUla is also home to important historic sites, which we cover in our guide to historic Saudi Arabia.
The mountains of Asir and Taif
Southern Saudi Arabia is green and mountainous. Around Abha, the air is cooler than in the rest of the country, and visitors come for mountain views, walking trails and cable cars. Closer to Makkah, the mountain town of Taif is known for its cooler climate and its rose farms, which are at their best in spring.
Best time for outdoor trips
| Adventure | Best months |
|---|---|
| Edge of the World and desert trips | October to March |
| AlUla | October to March |
| Abha and the Asir mountains | Summer, when it is cooler than the rest of the country |
| Taif | Spring for the roses, summer for cooler weather |
Staying safe
- Book with a licensed operator. Desert and off road trips should be led by experienced guides with suitable vehicles.
- Avoid the midday heat. Even in winter, start early or go in the late afternoon.
- Carry plenty of water. More than you think you will need.
- Wear the right shoes. Rocky ground and sand need proper footwear.
- Check the weather. Sandstorms and, occasionally, sudden rain can change conditions quickly.
- Tell someone your plans. Phone signal can be weak in remote areas.
- Check your travel insurance. Make sure activities such as quad biking are covered.
How to combine adventure with Umrah
Perform your Umrah first, while you are fresh and focused on worship. Then add a few days for travel. Riyadh and AlUla are reached by domestic flight, while Taif is a short drive from Makkah. Allow enough time between flights and activities, and keep the final day before your flight home free.
If you are travelling with family, our guide to Umrah with children and elderly parents has tips on pacing a longer trip.
What to pack
- Comfortable walking shoes or boots
- A hat, sunglasses and sun cream
- A light jacket for desert evenings and mountain air
- A refillable water bottle
- A small first aid kit
Frequently asked questions

From June to September, daytime temperatures in most areas are very high. Plan outdoor activities for the cooler months, or head to the southern mountains.
