Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast is one of the easiest ways to add a few relaxing days to your Umrah. Jeddah, the city most UK pilgrims fly into, sits right on the water, with a long seafront Corniche, sandy beaches to the north of the city and some of the clearest water and coral reefs in the world just offshore. This guide covers the best places to enjoy the sea, when to go and how to plan it around your pilgrimage.
Why visit the Red Sea coast?
Many pilgrims see Jeddah only on the way to and from Makkah. Yet a day or two by the sea gives your family time to rest after the busy days of Umrah, and children in particular love the change of scene. The Red Sea is also famous for its marine life, with coral reefs that attract snorkellers and divers from around the world.
Places to enjoy the sea in and around Jeddah
Jeddah Corniche
The Corniche runs for many kilometres along the coast, with promenades, parks, play areas and places to eat. Evenings are especially popular, when the heat of the day has passed and families come out to walk by the water.
Al Rahma Mosque
Often called the Floating Mosque, Al Rahma Mosque stands on the water’s edge and appears to float on the sea at high tide. It is a peaceful place to pray Maghrib and watch the sun set over the Red Sea.
King Fahd’s Fountain
One of the tallest fountains in the world, it shoots water high above the sea and is lit up at night. It is easy to see from the Corniche.
Obhur
North of the city centre, Obhur is where many residents go for beaches, boat trips and water sports. Some beaches are public and others belong to resorts and beach clubs, which charge an entry fee.
Snorkelling and diving
The reefs along the Red Sea coast are home to colourful coral and fish. Boat trips for snorkelling and diving leave from the Jeddah area. Choose an established operator and check that equipment and safety arrangements meet your needs.
The wider Red Sea coast
Beyond Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is developing new resorts along the Red Sea, with islands, lagoons and luxury hotels. These are further away and usually need a separate flight or a long drive, so they suit a dedicated holiday rather than a short stop after Umrah. Opening dates and access arrangements change, so check the latest information before planning a visit.
When is the best time to go?
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| November to March | Warm days and pleasant evenings, the best time for the beach |
| April and May | Hot, but mornings and evenings are still enjoyable |
| June to September | Very hot and humid, best for early mornings or water activities |
| October | Hot, cooling towards the end of the month |
Tips for visiting the coast
- Dress modestly. Public areas of the Corniche are family places. Private beach clubs may have their own dress rules, so check before you go.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Bring sun cream, hats and plenty of water, even in winter.
- Plan around prayer times. Many shops and cafes close briefly for prayer.
- Use licensed transport. Ride hailing apps and registered taxis are the easiest way to move around Jeddah.
- Keep children close near the water. Some areas have strong currents and no lifeguards.
Adding the coast to your Umrah
The simplest way is to add one or two nights in Jeddah at the start or end of your trip. Most UK flights arrive in and depart from Jeddah, so there is no extra flight to arrange. Many pilgrims prefer to complete their Umrah first and relax by the sea before flying home.
If you would like to include a stay in Jeddah, tell our team when you ask for a quote and we will build it into your package. You can also read our guide to the best time for Umrah from the UK to choose dates that suit both.
